Why's Our Web-Head Cosplayed So Often?

Many of us love to cosplay, and if you're reading this, chances are you do too. Well, one character I have seen cosplayed probably more than any other is the character of Spider-Man!

Before we start off let me say we all have our own reasons for why we cosplay, this article will just simply be my personal opinions and reasonings I have found throughout my interviews with people over on my podcast, ‘The Creatorcast’. Now if you’ll join me on the journey, let's explore and figure out why Spider-Man is one of the most cosplayed characters in the media.

THE MASK

Now probably the biggest and most important reasons for why people are drawn to Spidey is that anyone can wear the mask. This was the primary message of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and inspired a large number of fans of the character to want to put on the mask just as Miles had and be part of such a large community. This also allowed many people to form their own groups among friends that could all cosplay characters from all across Spider-Man media. There were people cosplaying Miles Morales, Peter Parker, Gwen Stacy, and many many others.

VERSATILITY

This inclusion also helps lead us into our next section of the conversation, Spidey’s versatility. There is something among all of Spidey fans known as a Spider Sona. This is basically people designing their own characters that can co-exist in a multiverse along with Spider-Man, be a variant across the multiverse, or even just simply be someone's own take on classic characters. Now these are the kind of suits I have seen draw lots of attention because they are so versatile. They can be anything. The customization of these characters can range from someone like @yobtales on Instagram and her custom character Night Weaver and her insane purple color palette, or more traditionally like my sona which is just my rendition of a classic suit (@jadethequeenofodd on Instagram).

WHAT SPIDER-MAN STANDS FOR

Our final and probably the most important reason for people to want to cosplay Spider-Man is what he stands for. Not just talking about Peter Parker but of the symbol Spider-Man. This is something that to a lot of people, in real life, in comics, and in movies means so much. Spidey represents the good in all of us, the Great Responsibility if you will. Talking from my personal experience, being in that suit, makes you feel good, it makes you feel like you are doing and being the good that Spider-Man can represent. And to us, that is a huge deal.

Thank you all for reading
