How to Organize a Cosplay Photoshoot

If you have either bought or finished making a brand new cosplay, then you're probably thinking you're ready for a photoshoot. This can be quite an expense between studio and photographer costs. So you'll want to make sure you use up your time during the shoot as effectively as possible. That's why you need to know how to organize a cosplay photoshoot to ensure you get the shots you're wanting.

Pick Out Your Costumes in Advance

Whether you want to use one or multiple costumes during your photoshoot, have them picked out before hand. Make sure you pack everything you need for them the night before so you aren't running late to make your appointment. If you plan to use multiple cosplays, be sure to run it by your photographer at the time of booking incase there is additional charges.

Plan Your Sets

Public settings, multiple backdrops and rental studios can be a lot to plan out. Make sure you get this all hammered out in advance. Set up where you're going to be and what your backdrop will be. You can even plan this out by the hour depending on how long your session is or if you plan to have multiple sets. This also applies to furniture or props you plan to use.

Research Poses

Take the time to study your character and other people cosplaying them to get an idea of how you'd like to pose. This way you won't be spending time trying to figure it all out in the moment without any references. You can even create a mood board with examples to have with you at the shoot so your photographer can help you to achieve the pose.

Collaborate on a Schedule

When booking the shoot with your photographer, you can also work with them to create a schedule for the photoshoot. This can be very helpful for long shoots, multiple sets or costumes. It ensures everything is organized and that you have a game plan to work from.

Create a Shot List

Another example of how to organize a cosplay photoshoot is making a shot list. This is a detailed list of all the images you want captured during your photoshoot. Make sure to review it with the photographer and get it to them before the day of the shoot. This ensures they can prep as well.

Prepare Your Handler

If you plan to bring a handler to help out during the shoot, you'll want to prepare them. First be sure to inform the photographer that you are bringing them. Then ensure the handler knows the location, costumes, sets, schedule and shot list. You can also share with them your pose research materials too so they can help you if you get stuck. Be sure to have an idea of what you need them to do while they're there so they can effectively help out.

Conclusion

Going into your cosplay photoshoot well organized and prepared can ensure you get the most out of it. It also makes you an effective client for your photographer which can help to work with them again in the future. Make sure to always put time into planning after or during booking so you can get an abundance of quality photos done.
