Different Types of Wigs for Cosplay

While the costume is probably the most important part of a cosplay, you can't deny a wig can help to tie it all together. It helps to create a final result you and fans of your costume will love. Whether you're a styling pro or are new to this part of cosplay, it helps to know what to shop for. If you're struggling to pick between all the different types of wigs for cosplay, explore these pros and cons to help you make a more informed decision.

Capless Wig

This simple wig has wefts that are sewn onto strips of thin elastic to create the cap of the wig. It does lack a full, solid surface though making it capless. These wigs are very accessible anywhere you typically purchase wigs from.

Pros

Different Types of Wigs for Cosplay - wigs
  • Better airflow due to the gaps between wefts

  • Cheapest option of all wigs

  • Durability

Cons

  • Less realistic looking

  • Hairline is less subtle

  • More difficult to style and part

Full Lace

These wig caps are entirely made of lace. They give more flexibility in styling than the capless and are much more realistic as well.

Pros

  • Most realistic looking

  • Clean hairline

  • Easy to style and part

Cons

  • Most expensive option

  • Lace can be very fragile

Lace Front

These wigs have lace similar to a full lace wig, however it's just at the front and top portions of the cap while the rest of it is typically wefts on thin elastic like the capless wig. These wigs are very common and available on most sites like costume stores, Amazon and more.

Pros

  • Clean hairline

  • More budget friendly than full lace

  • Durability in portions without lace

  • Easy to style and part

Cons

  • More expensive than capless wigs

  • Lace portions are fragile and can tear

Synthetic Vs. Human Hair

The hair type can be applied to most of the above cap options. Your choices typically are between synthetic and human hair. There are some key differences between the two that are worth noting. The main thing to note is the material they're made from. Human hair is made from natural hair while synthetic is created out of a synthetic material.

Synthetic Hair Pros

  • Less expensive

  • More accessible

Human Hair Pros

  • More realistic looking

  • Lasts longer

Conclusion

When shopping for wigs, you want to keep your budget and desired look in mind. There's two main components to look at and that's the cap of the wig and the material the hair is made from. If your goal is for something very realistic, lace options are probably the way to go. But if you're on a tight budget, the capless wigs are going to be your best bet.
